About Rajsamand

Rajsamand is a district town in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The district was constituted on 10 April 1991 from Udaipur district. The town is the district headquarters and is named after Rajsamand Lake, a man-made lake that was created in the 17th century by Rana Raj Singh of Mewar. The city is one of the largest marble producing district of the state. The district is divided into 7 sub division, 9 Tehsils and 7 blocks. There are 207 gram panchayats and 236 Patwar circles. Nathdwara, Ranakpur, Kumbhalgarh (Kumbhalmer), Udaipur (City of Lakes), Bhilwara are some of the nearby tourist destinations to the city.

Geography of Rajsamand

The city is located at 25.07°N 73.88°E with an average elevation of 547 meters or 1794 feet. The district lies in the watershed of Banas River and its tributaries. Other rivers flowing through the region are Gomati, Chandra, Ari and Bhoga. The city is bounded on the northwestern side by the Aravalli Range across which lies Pali district. The city has Ajmer district to the north, Bhilwara district to the northeast, Chittorgarh district to the south east and Udaipur district to the south. The city is well connected by different means of transport and nearby railway stations are Kankroli, Soniyana and Udaipur.

History and Culture of Rajsamand

The history of Rajsamand dates back to 17th century when Rana Raj Singh Mewar constructed an artificial lake Rajsamand in 1622 AD. The lake is a magnificent illustration of ancient designs and architecture that exist in the form of arches and pavilions. In addition to this, Rajsamand has witnessed the first war of Indian Independence in 1857 under Tantya Tope. There are many other historical places here that are quite popular today including Kumbhalgarh, the birth place of Maharana Pratap, battle place of Haldighati, Srinathji temple and the temples of Dwarkadheesh & Charbhuja.

Rajasthani and Hindi are the local languages spoken here. The district had a population of 9, 87,024 per census of 2001 with a make female ratio of 1:1 which is quite a rare phenomenon. Summer is very hot here with temperature hovering to 42 °C and best time to visit is between October to February.

Economy of Rajsamand

Rajsamand is rich in mineral resources and most of the people here are involved in organized & unorganized mining related works. It is one of the prime Indian suppliers of marble, granite and other valuable varieties of stone. Also, Dariba and Jawar mines are primary Indian sources of zinc, silver and manganese ores. There are also many tyre and tobacco factories in the region.

Rajsamand Lake
Built in 17th century, the royal lake is approximately 2.8 KM wide, 6.4 KM long and 60 feet deep. It is one of the five popular lakes of Mewar and river Gomti is the main supplier of water to it. On the southern end of the lake, huge embankment is composed of white marble having marble terraces and stone steps. It has five toranas where Maharana Raj Singh and his descendants used to organize the event of Tuladan every year. Also on the embankment are nine beautiful pavilions (ghats) having pictures of sun, birds, gods and chariots. The history of Mewar is inscribed here in 1017 stanzas on 27 marble slabs which is acclaimed to be the longest etchings of India. One can experience a scenic view here at sunset with glittering lake water.

Kankroli
The town forms a twin city with Rajsamand and is known for Rajsamand Lake and beautiful Dwarkadheesh temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple is built to resemble the famous Nathdwara shrine and is of great religious importance to the Vaishnavas & Vallabhacharya.

Haldi Ghati
It is a famous place known for the war between Mughar Emperor Akbar and Maharana Pratap in 1576. The place derives its name from the fact that its soil is yellow in color. It is described as "Thermopile of Mewar" by British author Col. James Todd in his famous book 'Anals and Antiquities of Rajputana.'
